PrEP Plus is a program from Hope & Help Connect that gets PrEP in the hands of
people who are HIV-negative or at-risk of contracting HIV. Getting PrEP, like any other
medication, can sometimes be challenging. But, with PrEP Plus, all the details are
taken care of for you. When you join PrEP Plus, you could start your PrEP regimen
within 72 business hours, upon approval from your medical provider.
What is PrEP?
PrEP is short for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis, a medication that when taken consistently
is effective at preventing you from contracting HIV through sexual contact, if you are
exposed. It’s one of many HIV prevention tools. PrEP does not prevent or treat STIs or
any other medical condition.
How does PrEP work?
Studies have shown that the risk of contracting HIV was 99% lower for those who took
PrEP than those who didn’t. When you take PrEP as prescribed, it provides significant
protection against HIV. Such protection is much more effective when you use condoms
and other preventative methods. PrEP does not prevent you from contracting other
STIs.
How can I begin taking PrEP?
The first step to starting PrEP is talking with your medical provider. Your medical
provider will discuss your sexual history, administer an HIV test, and then monitor your
kidney functions in order to determine if you are a candidate for PrEP.
How can I afford PrEP?
PrEP is covered by most insurance plans. However, regardless of whether or not you
have insurance or your ability to pay, PrEP Plus can provide you with temporary
assistance to get started. PrEP Plus is free for those who qualify. For patients with
medical conditions unrelated to PrEP, provider fees may apply.
